I found this novel really drew me in and I actually read it all in one day. It was a good read and had more to it than I was expecting. I don't want boik write any more about the affaid as I really don't want to give anything away which could easily be done? Details that make clear that M is after a prize so dear that -- were the killer to attain it -- Alex's heart would no longer have reason to beat. When she realises the extent of what has happens she breaks down and confesses all to her Mum.
Amanda Brooke is one of my top favourite authors! Firstly, this was a very touchy subject to write about and I think the author did a fantastic job of writing about a situation that is probably more common then anyone would like. The novel moves backwards and forwards through time and also has a number of confessional chapters which seemingly come from a diary that Scarlett has written.

This is certainly a very compelling read which touches a subject many parents must dread. Her mother, Nina, has just started to settle into married life with her second husband Bryn and apart from dealing with the usual teenage truculence from Scarlett and her older brother Liam, she had thought her life was going well. Suddenly her world seems to be spiralling out of control. There are also diary style extracts by Scarlett herself and through these we find out a bit more about what has really been going on -although even within the pages of her diary, she is keeping her secrets well. This was a book which had me changing my loyalties all the way through. Sometimes I felt sorry for Scarlett as it seemed she had been manipulated and strung along by this older man who should of course have had nothing to do with her.
