The Book of Traps and Lessons - Kate Tempest | Songs, Reviews, Credits | AllMusicThe album makes us confront the stark reality of how abhorrent we are as a human race. Yet Kate Tempest , thankfully, always manages to hold onto hope in the end. Tempest is no stranger to long narrative threads and storybook albums. Her first album, Everybody Down , brought us into the high-octane drug fuelled worlds of Becky and Harry, on her last album, Let Them Eat Chaos , Tempest captured the interlacing lives of seven unconnected strangers in the early hours of one morning, and like that album, The Book of Traps and Lessons is a story — but this time, the characters are us. The beats, basslines and discordant soundscapes that characterised her previous two albums have gone. Working with the legendary producer Rick Rubin, these clashing beats are replaced with soft piano chords, light strings — or sometimes nothing at all, to the point where "All Humans Too Late" is entirely spoken word. Tempest has always managed to link the mundane with the elevated, the pitfalls of love with the fanciful nature of relationships.

The Book of Traps and Lessons
The Book of Traps and Lessons is an album released with little context, or indeed, fanfare. It is an album that, really, should need no introduction. Kate Tempest is the finest poet of her generation — and this LP cements that status further still, given form by the inimitable production of Rick Rubin and Dan Carey, but given life by the stunning, seismic delivery from Tempest herself. We open with 'Thirsty': a sparse, delicate piano intro that gives way to an ethereal soundscape that perfectly complements the shifting contradiction of the narrative. In signature Tempest style, her lyrics dance between mythological and religious reference points, through to beautifully-observed, tender and entirely self-deprecating references to her own being. But there is hope for our heroine. It's tender, wrapped with physicality and raw emotion laid bare.
They brought theatricality to the Sixties music scene and went onto inspire as broad a range of artists as Blok Stranglers to Skrillex.
