The Hobbit, or There and Back Again - Kili the Dwarf - live or die? Showing ofThe third and final installment of Peter Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy opened this week. The first movie, An Unexpected Journey , contained bundles of nerdy references and was largely faithful to J. The second, The Desolation of Smaug , strayed a bit further from its source material, but was still largely Tolkien. The Battle of the Five Armies , however, turns a significant corner, relying on a heavy dose of artistic licensing and big screen razzle-dazzle. Much of the final film operates in a grey area somewhere between the Tolkien-Jackson dichotomies. In some cases, the Jackson additions seem to work; in others, not so much.

Rather than being delivered to Lake-town by elves, the company is forced to get a ride into town by Bard the Bargeman. Kili becomes part of her story and thereby takes on very un-dwarvish values, such as openness to - indeed.

There are very good reasons for the death of the characters in the book. Was it on this list that I posted that I only read The Hobbit after being forced to by my senior Lit teacher. The second, The Desolation of Sma. Balin is the dwarf with the most "page time," aside from Thorin.
