The Kay Scarpetta series clearly shows the work of a brilliant imagination, clever plotter, intelligent and savvy mind who understands people, and intense soul. So… why just 3 stars? I think the question for this book and my opening paragraph really goes back to the definition of a book review. Is it an honest opinion of a standalone book? An opportunity to highlight what you liked about it so others might read it?

Cornwell has been criticised for her unflinching treatment of the gruesome, though one might wonder why the squeamish would pick up a novel about a forensic pathologist. The focus of my blog is to review book series and not individual novels, but writers are going to continue writing novels within a series even after I have done my review, so I plan on reviewing the individual novels as they come into circulation. Before I purchased my Kindle, I would always carry whatever novel that I am reading at the time in my book bag. I would always dread getting the latest Cornwell novel because they seem to get heavier and heavier with each successive novel. To show that I am not just imagining that her books are getting bigger, I have graphed the number of pages found in each first edition hardcover novel within the series versus their order of release and this is what I get:. As you can see from the graph there is a general upward trend in the number of pages in each successive novel in the series. I am mainly pointing this out because the quality of a Scarpetta novel seems to be inversely related to the number of pages that are in each novel which is illustrated in this graph:. Interestingly, if you take notice, the latest novel, Flesh and Blood, has a significant decrease in page numbers and I have a theory to why this is so.
That said, I ask again I have a slew of niggles: Cornwell ;atricia resolves the pennies. I once asked her how she felt about each new female pretender to her crown being announced on the jacket as "The Next Patricia Cornwell"; she replied: "But I want to be the next Patricia Cornwell.
